Why We Built ScreenBreathe: Using Your Phone With Intention
Less distraction. More life.
Screen time is something everyone talks about. It comes up at family dinners, in school WhatsApp groups, in offices, and in almost every conversation about kids and phones. Most of us agree it is a problem. Far fewer of us feel we have actually changed it.
The moment we all recognise
You pick up your phone to check one small thing: a message, a notification, the time. Then you look up, and a lot of time has gone.
Later in the day comes the quiet part. You remember what you had planned. The work you meant to finish. The chapter you meant to read. The walk, the call, the evening with your family. And you realise your phone spent that time for you.
That feeling of regret is what this app is really about. It is not the number on a screen-time chart.
The question that started it
As a software developer, I kept coming back to one question: what if people used their screens with intention instead of by habit?
This is not about using less technology for its own sake. Phones are useful, and nobody wants to give them up. It is about the hours that quietly disappear into mindless scrolling. What if more of those hours went into the things people say they want more of: working on themselves, learning, doing meaningful work, and being present with the people they love?
One person getting a little of that time back is a small change. Multiply it across everyone, and it becomes a big one. I wanted to build something practical that could help with this, for everyone, and not only for people with unusual willpower.
Showing your time is not enough
Many apps show you a graph of where your time went. That is useful, and ScreenBreathe does it too. But a chart you look at in the evening does not change what happens at 3 pm, when the phone is in your hand and the work is on your desk.
So we built ScreenBreathe to do more than report. It helps you decide what you want to do before you start, and then helps you keep to it in the moment.
What is inside ScreenBreathe
- Focus sessions: Pomodoro, countdown and stopwatch modes, so you can work in timed blocks.
- App, website and content blocking: block the apps and websites that pull you away. Website blocking runs on your device.
- Strictness levels: choose Gentle, Focus or Deep, depending on how firm you want to be today.
- Daily app limits: set a limit for the apps you want to use less.
- Insights and goals: see where your screen time goes, set daily and weekly goals, and track your progress.
- Streaks and milestones: build a streak and reach milestones as your habits improve.
- Parental controls: tools for families, including a Kids Profile, to help children build healthier phone habits.
Who ScreenBreathe is for
Students who want to study without their phone winning every time. Parents who want healthier phone habits for their kids. Professionals who want to protect their focus at work. And anyone who has ever said, “I will just check one thing,” and lost an hour.
What we believe
- Phones are not the enemy. Unplanned use is.
- Good tools help you keep promises to yourself. They do not shame you.
- Better habits are built in small steps. One focused 25-minute session, then another.
Where we go from here
This is not the first app I have built, but it is the one I most want to put in the hands of people who need it. ScreenBreathe is new, which means your feedback will shape what it becomes. If something helps, tell us. If something is confusing or missing, tell us that too.
Write to us at [email protected], or leave an honest review on Google Play. Every review helps other people decide whether to try it.
